The Background

Parents often have no idea what their children are doing or learning at preschool and teachers are overwhelmed with the amount of administrative work.

KabarAnak (in English: Children’s Report) aims to keep parents stay connected to their children at school and to increase the urgency of parents regarding the development of their children's character and behavior from an early age in order to prepare mentally healthy future generations.

We started with foundational research to test our hypothesis and define the  product clarity. I work hand-in-hand with the supervisor to redefine company goals, set product features and direction based on qualitative interview data in order to optimize our product, and explore multiple approaches to elevate our product concept.

Parents & Teachers Research

I conducted an in-depth survey with 13 parents and 9 teachers from different preschools in Jakarta and Surabaya, Indonesia. The research aimed to empathize with potential users and discover the underlying factors and motives that drive users' needs.

Parents Finding (13 Parents)

9 out of 13 parents do not receive daily/weekly/monthly reports of their children's behavior or academic progress at school. Some presume that receiving reports quarterly is too late to communicate and nurture their children's inadequate school behavior.

Some schools forbid teachers from speaking with parents over the digital messenger. Thus, there is a communication gap for some parents.

6 out of 13 working parents admitted that they spend less time engaging effectively with their children than other full-time parents.

Teachers Finding (9 Parents)

8 out of 9 teachers are overwhelmed with the amount of administrative work and hesitant to write detailed- updates of students daily activity to parents.

6 out of 9 teachers think that a written record of their students' development is vital to be a shred of concrete evidence to identify children's natural strengths or a possibility of behavior disorder.

Define & Ideate

Considering the impact and effort, we decided to focus on students' behavioral development. By sharing an up-to-date behavioral development to parents, we aim this to be an early warning signal to identify children's negative behavior before it turns into habit and character—and to recognize children's innate strengths that may unleash their potential.
